Your results will differ — compression depends almost entirely on what is in the picture and how well it was already compressed. WebP and GIF are already efficient formats, so there is far less to win there than with a JPEG or a screenshot PNG. Yes. PuffPix has a free tier that lets you compress images directly in your browser with no account needed. Paid plans (Starter and Pro) unlock larger file sizes, higher daily limits, folder mode, the Max Compression engine, and API access.
PuffPix supports PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and SVG. You can also convert between formats — for example converting JPG to WebP for better web performance.
No. Uploaded files are automatically deleted within 30 minutes. We do not inspect, analyse or retain your image content. In Private mode (the 🔒 toggle), images never leave your device at all — compression runs entirely in your browser.
It varies enormously by format. Measured on our own files: a photographic JPEG dropped 68%, a screenshot PNG 67%, a flat-colour PNG 78%. Formats that are already efficient give up much less – a GIF around 27%, and an existing WebP only about 7%, because WebP is already a modern codec with little slack left in it.
Yes. Starter and Pro plans include an API key you can use to compress images programmatically. The API supports PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and SVG compression.
No. Folder mode requires Chrome or Edge — it uses the File System Access API, which Firefox and Safari do not support. All other features (Files mode, Private mode, API access) work in any modern browser. Please make sure you are using a supported browser before purchasing a plan that includes folder mode.
It depends on your volume. PuffPix supports the same formats as TinyPNG (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF) and adds SVG compression, folder mode, and a free trial of 100 credits that never expire. PuffPix uses industry-leading open-source encoders: MozJPEG for JPG (typically 10–20% smaller than standard libjpeg at the same visual quality, per Mozilla's own benchmarks), pngquant for PNG (lossy palette reduction achieving 60–80% savings on flat-colour graphics), cwebp for WebP output, Gifsicle for GIF, and a built-in XML optimiser that strips comments, editor metadata and redundant attributes from SVG. In Max Compression mode, MozJPEG and pngquant run together for the best quality-per-byte ratio.
Yes. Image file size is one of the biggest contributors to slow page load times, which directly affects Google Core Web Vitals — particularly Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). Google uses Core Web Vitals as a confirmed ranking signal. According to Google's research, pages meeting Core Web Vitals thresholds are 24% less likely to be abandoned during load. Compressing images can reduce image payload by 40–80%, improving LCP scores, reducing bandwidth costs, and lowering bounce rates. For best results, also serve images in next-gen formats (WebP) and size images to their display dimensions.
Yes — on an Apple device. Drop a HEIC into PuffPix in Safari on iPhone, iPad or Mac and it is converted to JPEG on your own device before compression, so the HEIC is never uploaded to us. On Windows or Android the browser has no HEIC decoder and this isn't possible; our HEIC to JPG page shows the two quickest ways round it, including the iPhone setting that makes it stop happening altogether.
For anything you publish on the web, usually yes. AVIF is built on the royalty-free AV1 codec and is typically 50–60% smaller than JPEG at comparable quality — in our own testing a 324 KB JPEG became a 130 KB AVIF. Every current browser displays it (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+, Edge 121+) and WordPress accepts AVIF uploads from 6.5. One catch: AVIF quality numbers aren't JPEG quality numbers, so a high setting can produce a larger file. Pick AVIF in the output format row, or use the standalone AVIF converter.
Lossless compression reduces file size without discarding any image data — the original can be perfectly reconstructed. Lossy compression achieves much higher savings by permanently removing data the human eye is unlikely to notice. PuffPix offers both: Quality mode uses conservative lossy settings that are visually indistinguishable from the original, while Max Compression pushes further for the smallest possible file. Private mode (🔒) runs lossless-only compression entirely in your browser.
